The reality in our garbage cans.
The filmmaker Valentin Thurn has tracked the reality in our garbage cans. In the waste containers provided by hypermarkets, supermarkets and those outside our front door. They include mass impeccable food, some still sealed, is often not even the best before date expired. Over ten million tons of food are thrown away each year in Germany alone. And there are more and more!
Why do we throw away so much? In the search for explanations talks with supermarket Valentin Thurn-sellers and managers, bakers, wholesale market inspectors, ministers, psychologists, farmers and EU bureaucrats.
What he finds is a system which we all participate in: Supermarkets offer throughout the entire product range. Until late in the evening the bread must be fresh on the shelves, in every season, there are strawberries. And everything must look perfect: A withered lettuce leaf, a crack in the potato or a dent in the apple, and immediately the goods are sorted out. Yogurt cup just two days before the expiration date.
